Nicoletta Costa was born in Trieste, where she lives and works.

She graduated in Architecture in Venice in 1978 and began working as a children’s book author a few years later.

She has been described as one of the greatest interpreters of the ‘world of childhood’ because she has managed to preserve her inner child and see the world through a child’s eyes.

It is this world that she has continued to portray through words and images in hundreds of stories since 1980: more than 500 books, which help us discover how children think, act and behave.

This is how her characters came to be: Giovanna the Moon, Mr Kite, Margherita the sleepy teacher, Teodora the witch, Olga the cloud who can’t be bothered to make rain, and finally Giulio the rabbit – the protagonists of countless mini-narratives that foster children’s self-confidence and faith in life.

Nicoletta Costa’s is a narrative and iconic universe that exists within the realms of animism, anthropomorphism and magical realism, under the sign of the cat – the omnipresent ‘guardian deity’ of the author’s poetics and a symbol of the child’s imagination – but it is also a precise pedagogical and educational journey that unfolds in entertaining illustrated alphabet books.
